My Nana Taught Me This Simple Trick to Clean Dusty Ceiling Fans With Zero Effort

Ceiling fans are great for keeping a room cool, but cleaning them is a chore most of us avoid. Dust builds up on the blades, and the moment you try to wipe them, it falls everywhere—on the floor, the furniture, and sometimes right on your face.

That’s when I remembered a simple trick my nana taught me years ago. It’s easy, requires almost no effort, and best of all, it keeps the dust contained.

What You’ll Need

  • An old pillowcase

  • Optional: a little all-purpose cleaner or water

How It Works

  1. Turn off the fan completely and make sure it has stopped.

  2. Lightly spray the inside of the pillowcase with cleaner or water (optional, but it helps trap dust).

  3. Slide the pillowcase over one fan blade.

  4. Gently pull the pillowcase back toward you while pressing lightly on the blade.

  5. The dust falls inside the pillowcase, not onto your floor.

  6. Repeat for each blade.
